About Andy
Andy is the founder and guitar builder of Andy Taylor Custom Guitars. He has been building a variety of things with wood and playing guitar from around the age of 7.
He was lucky to have a father in the building trade who always had a great tool box in the shed and was always there to answer the eternal question, “Dad, how do I do this?”. Andy’s skills with working with timber improved over the years and took a big leap forward when he built his first boat at around the age of 13. It was a joint project with his father and the boat won many a race down at the local yacht club. Many boats followed over the years and his last build was a 29 foot Norwalk Island Sharpie, which was launched in 2001 – all timber and varnish.
Having eventually had enough of boats and their constant demands for maintenance, he turned his thoughts to guitar building, which was a natural progression to support his continued love of music – he plays guitar and sings in local Bilgola Plateau band ‘Mad Bamboo’.
The first two attempts at building guitars were original ‘partsa’ builds, employing Warmoth necks. They were a success and the instrument building bug had bitten. It was then on to complete builds from that point on.
Since retiring from his day job, Andy has focused his time and energy on guitar building and sees many builds ahead. The workshop is now bursting at the seams with band saws, sanders, router tables and spray equipment, all necessary tools for a quality product.
He works closely with his clients to craft an instrument that speaks to them. Andy looks forward to crafting a bespoke guitar for you too!
